iDempiere - ADempiere on OSGi

Finally it is out! iDempiere the dream project of ADempiere or rather a nightmare as no one really appreciate those 2 real kitchen boys that worked at it till fruition. So that is why i am dedicating my forum and thots to announce their success. I am also suggesting a free icon i found in google to be its logo for the time being. Yep, it means someone cracked the egg and cooked it for us to eat it.

Drums roll please.

Ladies and gentlemen, may i present to you the latest in Open Source ERP technological framework - iDempiere. See http://demo.idempiere.com

What Carlos Ruiz has done is to migrate the latest improvements from 361 onto the new OSGi framework done by Low Heng Sin. Carlos also created the installation scripts such as for ImportDB. He is still struggling with some multi-platform flavours and from there it is my turn to put his produce onto a NSIS Windows installer.

Been OSGi means it is now more modular and easier to maintain on a grander scale. This version release has not been named yet, and we leave it to its creator Low Heng Sin to pick its logo or baby name preference. I like to also suggest the slogan to be "To fulfill, as promised". The words 'ADempiere' was meant to be 'to fulfill completely, with honour'.

At this moment it is released as iDempiere 4.0.

Another community member, Banym from Germany has contributed a test server for the above. Low Heng Sin is in Malaysia, 20 minutes away as i often referred his location as. Carlos Ruiz is all the way on the other side of me in Colombia. This has been a truly global affair made possible via a true free software sharing spirit and the Internet, we now can make dreams happen as if we are in the same room. Speaking of which, we now have our own preferred chatroom at irc.freenode.net #idempiere.

Kudos to Low Heng Sin and Carlos Ruiz!

(postscript rant: The temporarily ruling government in ADempiere will NOT announce about this as we are considered an exiled and unofficial fork. There were calls for us to be expelled and all our work as breaking their advertising rules. We have iterated that bragging about what you contributed is the FOSS way and not contributing what you bragged is NOT.

In fact the banner that stands in www.adempiere.com says it all. May 1st has passed. Where is their release? Or in Linus' words, 'Show me your code'. In fact much of the relevant and good code in present day ADempiere has been Low Heng Sin and Carlos Ruiz's. How can taking these kitchen boys code and flaming them as abandoning ADempiere at the same time makes sense? We won't be surprised that ADempiere takes iDempiere and claimed it as official ADempiere release. That is perfectly ok in line with the spirit of GPL. And we won't be surprised that thereupon they claimed us as an unofficial project and delete any of our representation in ADempiere SourceForge project, classifying us as having 'abandoned ship'. That does not look ok, even with the spirit of GPL to maintain credit where it is due.

This may come over as queer and even tasted bittersweet revenge in someone like Jorg Janke's lips for we now can grasp how JJ might have felt when he found us in his kitchen eating his cakes. So for the record here I rather call ourselves the unofficial fork of Compiere, and not ADempiere so as to maintain that spirit of GPL.

By this we are not trying to put anyone in flames. But records must be set right and shenanigans must be exposed to protect the contributors and also the often unaware community of users.

We are not abandoning the project as we are still trustees of it (Carlos holds www.adempiere.com and i hold www.adempiere.org from day 1, never abusing but protecting it from abusers). We shall return to it once the poison is removed, either by way of fresh elections due in a year's time or a popular grassroots uprising).

Kudos to the team and many support from our side to move further. I am sure people will start encouraging it as they learn the value of going for more FOSS than the pitfall of monopoly.-- sarafudheen
